Written by ENCE
ENCE is an Iberian and American integral wood-transforming forest company

Within the European macro-sector of Forest-Based Industries, ENCE’s business is developed following the parameters of environmental sustainability and the maximum ecological performance for its products.

ENCE is the first owner of eucalypt timberland in Europe as well as the European leader of bleached cellulose pulp based on plantation-harvested of Eucalyptus Globulus.

Non-integrated pulp production

The ENCE production sites in Spain (Huelva, Navia-Asturias and Pontevedra) can produce 1,070,000 tons of Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) and Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) market pulp per year, with a wide range of products and end qualities for any variety of paper grade with any singular specification.

Best available technologies for new capacities

In 2008 ENCE will increase its production capacity with the planned start-up of its M’Bopicuá Greenfield mill in Fray Bentos (Uruguay), designed for 500,000 tons per annum of eucalyptus bleached pulp according to the best available technologies (BATs). The fibre line and the recovery area will be supplied by Kvaerner and Metso including a biomass boiler.

The new mill fulfils all local environmental requirements and also incorporates an Environmental Management System for both the construction and the operation stages. The project implies the establishment of an Integrated Management System with specific actions for the monitoring and environmental improvement.

All wood consumed within the industrial process will come from forests with Forest Management Systems according to local and international standards and rules.

Eucalyptus Globulus, a winner fibre

The general properties of ENCELL pulps encompass the advantages obtained by using Eucalyptus Globulus as the main raw material, which together with the versatility and technologies of different production centres enable ENCE to produce adequate qualities for the most diverse end uses.

The morphological differences among the eucalyptus species directly affect the behaviour of the pulp made from each one during the papermaking process.

The pulp made from Eucalyptus Globulus requires less energy to reach any tensile strength and therefore volume and porosity are improved. As a result, pulp made from 100 per cent Eucalyptus Globulus also requires less refining and therefore less dewatering, which makes drainage easier and consequently improves its runnability. The conclusion is that at a given tensile strength, pulps made from Eucalyptus Globulus will have greater opacity, porosity and bulk at a lower manufacturing cost.

Service through innovation

ENCE is permanently devoted to innovating and developing new quality levels and applications for its pulps in co-operation with its customers. A characteristic of ENCE’s commercial philosophy is its readiness to explore and develop new technological challenges in co-operation with the client.

The customer service is upheld through the continuous development of its ENCELL brand products, the commitment of its technical service and the implementation of logistical systems that guarantee a suitable distribution.

Furthermore, ENCE offers its customers the necessary technical assistance for them to optimise and improve their operation and pulp treatment as well as helping to overcome any technical or operational question that may arise during the paper production process.

Research and development

Forest and Pulp divisions of ENCE share a Research and Technology Centre (CIT) located in Pontevedra and with branch stations in Huelva, Navia and Fray Bentos (Uruguay).

The Group carries out its research and technology project programmes through the CIT, whose main objectives are to foster the genetic improvement of the Eucalyptus Globulus species and to further innovation enhancing the mill’s industrial processes and products, in pulp (cooking, bleaching and specialised paper grades), but also in solid wood products, within a framework of sustainability and environmental respect.

These research and technological development plans are integrated within projects subsidised by the European Union and by the Spanish National Research Plan, in collaboration with prestigious research centres both in Spain and in the rest of Europe.

Environmental commitment

More than 50 years of technical Sustainable Forest Management with a complete team working in all forest areas and a deep knowledge of forest practices support ENCE’s relationship with the environment.

The Group has developed a Sustainable Forest Management System that has been certified through the PEFC and FSC schemes being the seventh forest manager in the world, and the first eucalyptus manager to accomplish it. The certifications obtained by ENCE include the Chain of Custody PEFC and FSC schemes in the pulp mills.

ENCE has developed special management systems according to the ISO 9001:2000 Quality system, ISO 14001:1996 Environmental system, PEFC Spanish System (UNE-162.001), FSC International Standard and Spanish Labour Risk laws. All systems are combined in an Integrated Management System that assures the fulfilment of all the requirements already determined.
