John Wiley & Sons - Strategic Thinking Delivers New Efficiencies

About Wiley

Wiley logoJohn Wiley & Sons is a leading publisher of scientific, technical, and medical (STM), professional/trade, textbook and other educational materials in print and online.  Through its offerings, the company addresses a wide range of specialized markets worldwide, including journals, encyclopedias and electronic products, as well as publications in business, accounting, nonprofit institution management, computers, psychology, architecture, engineering, hospitality and the culinary arts.

The Challenge

Like most publishers, Wiley employed the traditional business model of printing and distributing books and other materials through its distribution channel.  Having been in business nearly 200 years and with an expanding number of titles under management, the company found itself running out of warehouse space in addition to looking for a solution to serve customer demand when the demand for a book was low – a book should always be available, and never out-of-print.  In response, Wiley launched a corporate project to find a more efficient manner of managing its assets to optimize the use of its warehouses and to eliminate lost sales due to out-of-stock situations and out-of-print titles.

The Solution

Wiley had become familiar with the services offered by Lightning Source through an earlier shot-run pilot conducted in 1998.  As the project team considered its options, it was evident that a partnership with Lightning Source could play a significant role in helping the company better manage its expanding portfolio of titles, not only optimizing warehouse utilization, but also delivering substantial cost and time-to-market benefits, keeping valuable information in print and better serving customers needs.

Wiley’s goal was to create a virtual library for its customers to order from and a virtual warehouse from which product could be printed, on demand, to fill orders.

The Results

Wiley has transferred more than 4,700 titles from all three divisions to a print on demand model using the services of Lightning Source, and that number continues to grow.  The program produced over 228,000 unit for Fiscal Year 2006. Wiley is on track to substantially increase it’s numbers for Fiscal year 2007, ending April 30.  In addition, the Lightning Source relationship has made it possible for Wiley to easily produce and distribute e-books, resulting in new product offerings and new revenue streams for the company.
