| Oxford University Press - Streamlining the Publishing Supply Chain |
About Oxford University PressThe ChallengeLike many publishers, Oxford University Press was looking for a more efficient process for mining and managing its backlist. By keeping as many books as possible in print, not only would the Press be able to benefit from increased revenues, but it would also be able to better serve both its internal and external constituencies.Linking Up with Lightning SourceOxford University Press turned to Lightning Source to begin converting its backlist to digital format, converting more than 3,000 titles in 24 months. Once a title was digital, it could be printed in ultra short runs to minimize inventory risk, or simply printed to order and shipped directly to the buyer within a few days.Niko Pfund, Publisher, Oxford University Press USA said, “Lightning Source had an excellent business model that would allow us to produce even one-off books efficiently and cost effectively. This would allow us to not only generate a new revenue stream, but to diminish the friction with authors whose books were out of print, as well as internally with editors who were continually pressing marketing to be more aggressive about printing.” Changing the Model“With print-on-demand, while you still have a small proportion of books with high volume sales for which economies of scale justify conventional printing, you effectively reverse the traditional model and your income is spread over a large number of titles. In my opinion, this is good business and good publishing.” Niko Pfund, Vice President & Publisher, Oxford University Press USA.Today, about 10% of the revenues for the US Academic Division are generated by print-on-demand. Revenues from the print-on-demand program are expected to continue to grow as OUP converts more titles, and ultimately entirely eliminates out-of-stock or out-of-print conditions by leveraging Lightning Source’s innovative technology and supply chain efficiencies.
